iPhone App FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
- ChessPad
- Bug Reporting
- I found a bug and want to report it - what do you need?
1) Tap the "i" button and record the Version number you see at the bottom - it has the form "number.number (number)".
2) Provide as much context as possible - the more information as to what you did, what you expected to happen, and what did happen, is critical.
- Downloading
- New to the iphone experience and having trouble figuring out how to enter pgn files
www.chess.com has lots of games. Go to downloads, and tap on either a zip or PGN file to download it to our App.
- Export
- I saved a game but didn't email it - how can I export it now?
Tap on Saved Games, then select one, and tap on PGN. In the text window perform a "Select All" then "Copy". Now the game is on the clipboard. Switch to Mail or some other app and paste the game in.
- Getting Started
- I just bought the program, what should I do now?
In the opening view, tap on the "i" button. Enter your name (Last, First) and email address (Apple gives us no way to determine this programmatically). You can optionally enter a Contact Group name and enable it. Also, you can enter Locations.
- Groups
- Why do you support Groups?
Currently, Apple's Contact app only lets you enter names in the common list, even though the Apple framework supports multiple groups. Since you could have hundreds of entries in you common list, finding Chess partners could be difficult.
The app lets you create (and rename) a group where you can enter and selected Chess partners. This group is also visible from the Contacts app. Even if you enable this feature, you can still select partners from the common list.
If you enter names in a special group, then later decide you don't want to use that anymore, the app moves all people from the special group into the common group for you, so no entries are lost.
- Help
- I'm trying to enter some text, but am not sure what to enter?
Many if not most text entry fields have a "i" button to the right of the Title. Tap that to view help regarding that text field.
- Import
- I copied a PGN game onto the clipboard, but the app does not import it.
Insure that you have copied all the tags - the items enclosed in "[" and "]" as well as the actual moves. If you did this, and it still does not work, it may be that the PGN is flawed - if you can email such games to us we can take a look and make sure that it's not a bug in the app. - I imported a file with 10 games - why only 8 were saved?
he PGN parser is forgiving but has limits - and may reject games that do not follow the documented specification (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Game_Notation). - What do I need to know before importing games?
The app imports both text and zip files that contain one or more PGN-formatted games. The PGN parser is forgiving but has limits - and may reject games that do not follow the documented specification.
Note that you can import a file with over 100 games in it, but deleting games is currently done a game at at a time. You can get an idea of how many games would be imported by scrolling through the text view prior to tapping Save. - Where can I find PGN games for download?
One site: www.chess.com/downloads - Why does the app support Paste?
Some web site may not format games in a way that the app can import through web navigation. Thus, if you can view the PGN text in any app that supports Copy, you can put it on the clipboard there, then Paste it into the app.
- Mail
- How can I prevent Mail going to either me or the opponent when both exist?
When the Mail message view appears, delete the desired recipient. Note that you can also type in other recipients as desired, change the email text (the game is attached as a file), etc. - I emailed games, but never received them - where are they?
If more than one email account exists, then external programs automatically use the "Default" account, as defined in Mail Settings. If the password is not set or wrong for that account, then the messages get queued in its OUT box. - Why don't I get an option to email my games when saving them?
Newly recorded and saved games only can be emailed to yourself and/or your opponent. For the option to appear at least one of those email addresses must exist - if you did neither provided one for yourself nor for your opponent, then the email option does not appear.
Additionally, Mail has to have been configured and enabled.
Note that when you get the option to Save and Mail a game, this is the only time such an option presently exists.
- Pasting
- When I try to load from clipboard I have no luck. Is there a trick to this?
end this link to an email address you can see on your phone, then click on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Game_Notation
Safari will open and tap "Usage". Scroll down til you get to the PGN text. Tap and hold, then block the PGN text and tap "Copy. Startup or switch to ChessNotePad, tap "Import from Clipboard", and you should get the game. Tap top right to save the game.
The "Save" button goes dim, switch to "Saved Games", choose "White", and scroll to "Fischer".
- Pieces
- Where did you find those beautiful chess pieces?
We licensed them from Peter Wong: http://www.virtualpieces.net/
- Playing
- How can I play Black?
When you first start a game, tap the "i" button. At the top center is a control showing "White|Black". Tap black, Return to the board. - One level of undo/redo is not enough!
An upcoming free upgrade will support unlimited undo/redo.
- Recording
- How do I record a move?
First, make sure you have entered your color before the game starts (tap the "i" button), since once you start entering moves this cannot be changed.
To record a move, tap the piece, tap the square you wish to move to. Double check that both are correct and optionally select a NAG code. Then tap Accept.
If you then discover you made an error, you can tap the Undo button and perform the above steps again. - If I use the app at a tournament, what issues do I need to know?
The app only allows legal moves. Thus, if someone makes an illegal move and you try to record it, the app will not let you. You need to have an agreement as to what happens if this occurs.
Common errors would be attempts at en passant later than the permitted opportunity, castling through check, unnoticed check where only moves removing check are allowed. - My partner suspects I'm getting help from the Internet
Either before starting the app, or afterwards, start Settings, and switch into Airplane mode. In this mode, all transmitters are turned off. However, since WIFI can be enabled after going into Airplane mode, the app shows the state of Internet and Phone data connectivity in the first view.
The app has no playing capability - in any mode. It can only record moves, not suggest or evaluate them. - What are the steps to record a game?
After tapping on "New Game", press the "i" in the lower right side. Tap the "White|Black" control at the top to set your color. All other information is optional.
Enter the name of your opponent, or select one from the Contacts chooser. If you have enabled the Group feature (see the "Getting Started" FAQ) you can enter a new Contact into that group, and it then gets selected automatically.
The Event can be entered as well as the Round. The Site chooser is at the bottom of the screen and defaults to "?" (see the "Getting Started" FAQ to learn how to enter new Sites). - Why can't the app record illegal moves?
While it might appear reasonable, PGN format is quite detailed, and many if not most illegal moves cannot be properly encoded. In fact, even downloaded games that contain illegal moves will be rejected. - Why doesn't the app show Check and Checkmate?
The philosophy behind this app is to be as unobtrusive as possible - even though the program knows when check or checkmate has occurred, it provides no indication of this during recording (it does during play back).
When a player is in check, only moves that remove check are allowed. When checkmate exists, no piece can be selected. - Why does the screen stay lit forever during recording?
This is a feature not a bug! While recording, the app disables the sleep timer to facilitate rapid move entry. If it were to dim naturally, you would be constantly distracted by it going dim then lighting up. - Why is there UNDO and REDO?
If you enter a move too quickly, you might only recognize an error after pressing ACCEPT. The app lets you undo one entry - but if you then see that in fact the move was actually correct, you can REDO the move instead of having to do it by hand.
- Replay
- What does the White/My/Black option do?
When you select "My Games" you just see games you played regardless of color. These games can be either ones played on the iPhone or imported (the name must match exactly). What the table displays is your opponent.
When you select "White", you the list of games where you are NOT the white player. These games may be imported games you did not play, or games you played but were Black. Ditto for selecting Black.
- Sites
- Why do you support Sites?
The PGN chess format has several mandatory fields - Location is one of them. Since you likely only play in a small set of places, you can enter them once, then when you play a game, you can just select the relevant entry. However, you can always enter them using the keypad if you wish.
